Project: “Jacoba Mulderhuis” - Digital Creative Concept for the Grand Opening

In this project, my task was to develop a digital creative concept for the grand opening of the Jacoba Mulderhuis, the latest building of the Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences. The objective was to create a celebratory and meaningful experience for attendees.

My Concept

Drawing inspiration from the concept of education and growth, I likened education to the growth of a plant or a tree. Just like plants, students need the right environment, time, and nurturing to flourish. I wanted to convey this metaphor and emphasize the diverse paths available for students to excel. I proposed incorporating elements of philosophy, sustainability, and diversity to create an engaging experience.

Ko’s Bos

I developed an installation called “Ko’s Bos” (Ko’s Forest) as the centerpiece of the opening act. This installation represented Jakoba Mulder, the building’s namesake, who was a renowned architect and advocate for green spaces in Amsterdam. Ko’s Bos simulated a forest environment inside the building, complete with greenery, digital waterfalls, sounds, and scents. The installation aimed to symbolize the transformative power of education and the importance of a conducive learning environment.

Symbolism and Impact

Ko’s Bos was designed to stimulate the senses and serve as a metaphor for growth in education, much like plants and trees. It represented the journey of students starting as seeds and seeking light, gradually growing with time, patience, and nourishment. The installation emphasized the role of students, teachers, and the environment in facilitating personal and intellectual growth. The non-linear nature of plants and trees mirrored the diverse approaches to education, providing tangible evidence of the many ways students can unlock their full potential.

Conclusion

In just 10 weeks, a relatively short period of time, I successfully conceptualized and executed a digital creative concept for the grand opening of the Jacoba Mulderhuis. This project challenged me to work efficiently and effectively, utilizing my creativity, organizational skills, and ability to deliver impactful experiences. I collaborated with teachers, fellow students, and family members to bring the installation, Ko’s Bos, to life. Overcoming my fear of public speaking, I confidently presented and explained the project to an audience of over 500 attendees. This experience not only showcased my capabilities as a designer but also demonstrated my adaptability and commitment to delivering outstanding results within tight deadlines.
