As part of the course Beyond, we were tasked with designing a solution for a complex problem that extended beyond traditional screen-based interfaces. The focus of Project Beyond was on leveraging computer interaction and sensors embedded in everyday objects and our surrounding environment.
Concept
Recognizing the importance of taking breaks while working from home to enhance productivity, we developed the concept of Bloom Break. The Bloom Break is a smart plant sensor equipped with a call system called Bloombuzzer, which serves as a reminder to take regular breaks. By integrating technology with nature, the Bloom Break promotes mental and physical rejuvenation during work sessions.
Motivation
The Bloom Break project held significant personal significance, especially given the circumstances of the COVID-19 pandemic that compelled us to work from home. I was driven by the desire to create a sustainable and productive solution that effectively balanced personal and professional responsibilities, acknowledging the challenges of maintaining such a balance in a remote work environment.
Recognition and Impact
The Bloom Break project received commendation, as it achieved a grade of 9 out of 10. Furthermore, the course coordinator expressed interest in utilizing my work as a sample project due to the concept’s innovation and the visually appealing presentation. This recognition further validated the effectiveness and potential impact of the Bloom Break solution.
Conclusion
Working on Project Beyond and developing the Bloom Break concept provided me with valuable experience and insights. I learned the importance of considering unconventional interfaces and incorporating technology seamlessly into our daily lives. Throughout the project, I had the opportunity to showcase my skills not only in conceptualizing and designing the Bloom Break solution but also in creating all the accompanying illustrations myself. The positive reception and recognition received for this project further reinforced my abilities as a designer and motivated me to continue pushing boundaries and creating innovative solutions that address complex problems.
